To celebrate a lovely spring day, Sam and I strolled to Crisan, a wonderful “edible art bakery” on Lark Street. What did we order? Gelato.

Sam enjoyed a delicious dish of mocha, and I devoured a scoop of pistachio and a scoop of hazelnut on a cone. I know what you’re thinking, “Sam, the big guy, only had one measly scoop, and Melissa had two?” I said, “I wanted a small,” and the response was “cones only go by scoops.”

    I couldn’t resist.

Take that Ben & Jerry’s with your annual “free-cone-day”. Our delicious outing only cost $4 and that included a tip for the poor soul, who was left to scoop gelato by herself on a very hot day.

I love old things, which is a trait I inherited from my father. A few years ago, he took me on my first antique field trip in Hudson, NY. This up and coming town has over 65 antique stores on one little block. The day I went with him I purchased this:

A few weeks ago my dad, Sam and I wondered into JGA Antiques & Collectibles in Valatie, NY, and Sam bought an old Mini Swiss clock. I didn’t buy anything, but I was very captured by the antique jewelery, especially the rings. [Sam's brother recently proposed to his girlfriend, Jenna with a ring he found at an estate sale.]

Over the past couple of years, Sam has been collecting old clocks, but his new fetish is antique watches. My dad easily persuaded Sam, my mom and I to go antique shopping in Hudson last Saturday. Although neither of us bought an antique, Sam bought an hour glass with black diamond dust from Lounge.

Today, Sam and I went to New Scotland Antiques on Western Ave. You might say that I had to sift through some dust, but this is what I found:

The interesting gentleman behind the counter said the ring was probably 125 years old, making it roughly around 1884. Although the picture doesn’t do my precious treasure justice, the ring is 14 carat gold, adorned with purple mood stones down the center and pearl seeds on either side and detailing on the band.

No, my friend, these are not the cute country squirrels that occasional steal a sunflower seed or two from your bird feeder. These are city-slicking squirrels that eat everything in sight, including the following:

    6 inch pillar candles
    large pine cones
    lattice
    Christmas tree lights
    solid wood chairs
    rubber grill hose (twice)
    metal tea-lite holders
    flowers
    rugs

Since, I am an animal- friendly kind of gal, I opted not to harm the varmints. Last year we captured over twelve squirrels using peanut butter and released them in Washington Park, which is only a few miles away. Now I’m thinking that this may not have been far enough away.

This year Sam and I did some research and discovered CritterRidder, which is supposed to keep pesky squirrels away. Although this worked for like a week, they appeared again, as if they had never left, eating through four of the six strands of Christmas lights. I understand that they are cute furry animals trying to survive in this big city, but I’m afraid I may end up resorting to rat poison or a BB gun. Or maybe, I will use a paint ball gun and paint each of their tales a different color, so that I know which ones are returning…

Or maybe since I am still a softy, I could convince my land lord to hire a professional to remove them without harm.
